| A statistic is a numerical
value calculated from a set of data that
describes a characteristic of that set of
data. Typical statistics include the mean
and the standard
deviation.
The set of data is often a representative
sample from a very much larger population
and the statistic is used to infer the equivalent
characteristic of the population. The equivalent
characteristic is a 'parameter'.
