The measures of central tendency are the
statistical measures that indicate the locality
or centrality of the data. The most common
measures are the numerical average, mean,
median and mode.
Often used as a synonym for the 'Mean',
but strictly speaking can refer to any statistic
that characterizes a set of data.
Often called 'the average'. It is the sum
of the values in a sample divided by the
number of values:

The mean of a population is
represented by m.

If there are an even number of values, the
median is the average of the two middle
values.
The median of the values 3, 5, 6, 20 is
5.5
The most common value in a set of data.
The mode of 3, 5, 5, 6, 6, 6, 9 is 6.
