| In experimental
design it is usual to substitute
'coded factors' for the actual physical
values.
For example a design could use two pressure
levels 120psi and 130psi. For the purpose
of analysis these would be converted into
coded factors with the levels '-1' and '+1'.
This substitution simplifies the analysis
and interpretation of the results.
