COMMENTS
Margaret: I usually adjust gamma in Photoshop so I found it very difficult to resist any alterations.
Q. How should I have setup the camera to get better light balance and minimize corrections in Photoshop?

AL: You are shooting right towards the sun so no matter what you do there are going to be things in that image you probably don't like. I probably would also have tried exposure compensation of say -2 to -2.5 and maybe tried a manual white balance setting.

COMMENTS
Margaret: Apart from being a bit dark this photo seems to be blurred.
Q. How could I improve camera settings to have better definition of the water ?

AL: At 1/25th second that is why it blurred. Use a tripod. I would also try f27 at say 1/10th second to blur the water into a milky type of wave (we will get to that later). I like the silhouette figure.

Margaret: This photo was taken on my fixed Canon compact.
Q. How could I improve camera settings for this photo?

AL: Lens flare at bottom on an otherwise perfect image. Keep shooting more images as the sun goes down and you will no doubt get one or several without the lens flare.

COMMENTS
Margaret: The bug was on the water and unfortunately I got the reflection of the sky.
Q. Other than changing the position could I have reduced the reflection by changing the settings?

AL: Use of a polarizer filter would have solved that issue and we get into that later.

COMMENTS
Margaret: The sky has not shape or color.
Q. Could I use a setting or a filter that would maintain the lighting on the road and buildings while making the sky visible?

AL: A neutral density filter might help on that one, that is a tough shot if you do not want the street in silhouette.

COMMENTS
Margaret: I used the polarizing filter on this photo.
Q.
Why does the sky look so weird?

AL: because you used 18mm, and that happens at the widest lens opening with a polarizer. I get this all the time.
