ASSIGNMENT 6: Portraits, Light, Infrared, Fires

Since it is the last week I took a bit different approach. We had a small wineries event over the weekend and I went there with the camera. The wineries are in the area affected by February bushfires. It was heart warming to see the slow return of life. Most of the debris from the burnt houses have now been removed. Amazingly, there are already partially rebuilt houses. My focus was on the incredible regrowth with the dazzling green colours. Most photos this week are from that trip. But first some portraits, morning light and infrared for the assignment.

Since my husband would not pose I tried to get the wallaby to pose. It obliged. All wallaby photos were taken through a window from inside of the house. Otherwise it would run away. I also spotted a cockatoo in the tree.

Always my favorite light. How could I reduce overexposure in the sky on the first photo? ND4 or a graduated/skylight filter? How to bring better color for the sky in the second? CPL filter? (I am trying to decide what filters to buy, CPL - circular polarizing is at the top of the list but I have not ordered it yet)

These are also the first pictures from the bushfires area in the wine growing district of Yarra Valley. We had some rain - not enough to break the drought but enough for plants to start regenerating. On the left a tree covered with leaves on small branches growing directly from the burnt trunk. See below for close ups. The infrared was done in software Photoshop Elements 7.

On top right shows how hot the fires were - with leaves burnt - under 1000C, where there are only black trunks left - over 3000C. Very hot. A lot of fencing was lost in the fires (top left).

The light was not the best. I am planning to go back for more photos if I can get up early enough to be there at the best of morning light! You can see the mosses, low grass, ferns (bracken), wattle seedlings, leaves growing from trunks, and even tree ferns - all coming back just 4 months after the fires.

That's it for now!

Have fun!
